Ambassador Tony Motley of Stuart, Florida, passed away peacefully on 14 October 2023. Ambassador Motley, a man of diverse cultural influences, was the son of an expatriate and came from an old Virginia family. His father was an executive for a US company in Brazil, where Tony grew up, mastering English, Portuguese, and Spanish, a testament to his linguistic versatility.
Ambassador Motley graduated from The Citadel in 1960 with a degree in Political Science and a regular commission in the United States Air Force. He served 10 years in the US Air Force during which time he met his wife, Judith "Judy" Jones, and completed tours in Great Britain, Panama, and Alaska, where he remained after his military service.
President Ronald Reagan appointed Tony as Ambassador to Brazil and later promoted him to Assistant Secretary of State for Latin American Affairs. Tony played a pivotal role as the key State Department link in coordinating the Grenada attack, a mission that saved American medical students. He was later vital in the US efforts during the Central American Civil Wars.
Ambassador Motley's love of service, unwavering dedication to his country and his fellow alumni let him continue his service by becoming the President of The Citadel Club of Greater Washington in the early 1990s, rebuilding the club.
All alumni and guests are welcome to attend.
